Let me preface this with a disclaimer...
I am in no way a fan of American Idol and have spent 8 years refusing to audition. However, it must be known, that Paula Abdul's hasty decision to leave Idol is the best thing to have ever happened to that show. Although she brought hours of delusional laughter sprinkled with nonsensical blabber attempting to utilize music theory to make a point, the show's credibility just soared in my eyes. How she was EVER hired is beyond me. The last person I would have chosen for that position was her.
I'm sure in it's initial year, producer's had a hard time finding someone who had both, a musical career at one time, as well as some sort of notoriety to this day. Oh yeah, and didn't mind being on tv as a judge and not a performer. But the woman cannot sing. She never was able to and still can't. Let's put aside her dancing career and even her deniable drug infused banter, her personal talent was never reason enough to hire her for that position. I hated that contestants were judged on their voice alone and FOX had a woman who had never sang live in front of an audience, to judge them. Her "points of view" were rehearsed and often written down on cue cards in front of her. She'd shuffle them and read which ever one Simon pointed to. Even last year when she and Randy performed her "latest" and "last ever" single, she still didn't sing live. What kind of representation of a VOCAL COMPETITON reality show, is that? And, on top of all that, her actual voice sound nasal and muffled and synthetically created. Below is a video of her singing "live" and even rapping!
